Absolutely Free One on One Chess Coaching

Hello, welcome to my chess coaching thread. I am RetroGordy also known as RetroShumway on Twitch.TV!

I'm a Gen-X guy, longtime gamer and semi-professional MTG player of which I competed competitively in Pro Tour Qualifying events from 1994-2005. At the age of 9 I learned chess from my grandfather, playing regularly until my teenage years. I stepped away from the game picking up alternate hobbies as mentioned above.

I have many more years of knowledge of the game than my playing may show. I'm rated 1650 on Lichess and 1600+ on Chess Universe. I do most of my coaching and training here on Chess.com. In just 90 days I've played over 2000 games online, and have climbed at an astounding rate of over 1000 points. Please understand that some of the best trainers and coaches in the world were some of the worst players. I have over 20-years of educational and training experience. I poses a unique way of educating people, a brisk but enthusiastic direct one-on-one technical approach to help you learn the absolute most you can in a short period of time. I will help you create new better habits in chess, opening preparation, middle and endgame understanding, checkmate patterns, as well as chess tactics... Think about it, what do you have to lose?

What do I ask of you? All I ask is that;

  1. You set aside roughly 1-hour of time, distraction free to work with me, here on chess.com via the classroom (invitation link will be provided)
  2. Click THIS LINK to my calendly account to schedule your next coaching session!
  3. Please, this is an entirely free service offered by me. I ask you to respect me and my time, commit yourself to the lesson(s) and show up
  4. The willingness to learn and improve
  5. Be open-minded, relaxed and a will to learn. Take notes as needed, practice your training in your future games and most importantly HAVE FUN!!
  6. Leave an honest review (good, bad, or neutral in this thread) of your experience). This helps me gauge my methods in correspondence with my plans

Who are these lesson(s) for?

I've set an appropriate targeted audience for myself in the ranges from 0-1300 rated players. For now I feel anyone above the 1300 rating would likely benefit greater from a more experienced professional in the chess field.

What kind of coaching do I offer?

  • A one-on-one approach via the Chess.com classroom
  • Audio and/or video during the lesson. A microphone on your end is not required but beneficial
  • Game analysis and review to discuss your repetitive behaviors, both good and bad
  • Personalized plans that are not generic but catered to you and your playstyle!
  • Non-generic over publicized information
  • I will review your past 3-5 games both wins and losses to come up with a specific training plan designed and built specifically for YOU

What do I get out of all this?

My hope is to make this a long-term, successful encounter with a large enough student base that maybe something more will grow from it. That's it! There's no small print, gimmick or catch to this offer. Respect me and my time, and I'll equally respect yours.

How do we proceed?

Visit my Calendly HERE to schedule a session. Send me a brief private message confirming your booking. Lastly, allow me a bit of preparation time prior to our meet and we'll begin!

Keep in mind, I'm only one person. So there will only be so many spots available at a time. I will however reply to all messages and inform you if there may be a small wait. My recommendation is to continue playing in the meantime versus REAL-LIFE players (not bots) and I'll follow-up as soon as possible. This is a first come first serve basis.

Thank you for all who has inquired. I hope you enjoy your day!

Hello Gordy,

I have just finished with our first session in chess.com classroom, and I was very impressed with it. The way that you layed and looked at the "weaker" areas of my game was very helppful. The way in which you pointed out my weaker areas was done in a way that I didn't feel dumb or embarassed. The systematic approach to laying the lesson for the session was also very nice.

Once we got in to the session itself, the examples that you used from my games helped me see things that I was overlooking. Having another person see some of the same shortcomings that I saw myself also was a great relief that I wasn't losing my mind. LOL It was also a plus on a selfish level that you are a Pirc and Scotch guy like myself. You seem from our first session to be a naturally gifted teacher. You pass on your knowledge and playing experience in a very friendly non "arrogant" way.

You also layed out a very compact concise lesson plan until our next session that I didn't feel overwhelmed with. And also some very helpful nuggets of wisdom "no less than 3min. left". In closing I thought my time with you was well spent, and I'm glad we were able to connect. Until next time!!!

I just finished a lesson with him and it went amazing, he told me how to improve my gameplay and gave me some advice on what to avoid.

Hello, I would love to have some help! I’m starting to recognize some of the things I do not do well or understand, but still have a ways to go! Feel free to shoot me a message and possibly set up a time for training!

Hello! I would love to take some free lessons with you! I am in Canada Mountain time zone (MST). As for timing, my schedule happens to be very open this month so I did not have a specific time in mind. I am committed this Friday and Saturday to some other stuff though so those days might not be best. Otherwise, shoot me a message and we can set something up!
I am currently 818 elo and have kinda stagnated at the 800 level in rapid. I think I have the potential to play above this level but I have taken a fair few losses lately so something is not working.

when r u ready?

Am I the only one who would be cautious on taking lessons and analysis from a 800 rated rapid player?

All games are fun filled with blunders and missed tactics.

I would think learning opening principles and chess fundamentals, blunder checking and tactics training is the way to go at our level.
