Analysis tells me a move is excellent, good, inaccurate or a blunder. But why?

Is there anyway to find out why moves are rated the way they are? For instance, if the analysis software rates a move as, say, a "mistake" how do I figure out why the move is viewed to be a mistake?

Jesin

Check out how the engine refutes your move. It will tell you what the best moves continuing forward are but you will be in a worse position if it was a "mistake"

Thanks for taking time to reply, Jesin. I suppose it is utopian to hope for this, but I was hoping for something of a tutorial nature, perhaps some annotations saying something like, "following your bad move, opponent can skewer your queen with his bishop" or "opponent can destroy your pawn structure" or "you left key pieces undefended" or "you took pressure off opponents king". I suppose that's too much to ask. Maybe in a couple of decades we will have AI software capable of such things, but not quite yet. In any case, at this stage, I'm too green to interpret what is going on in the alternative lines of play the engine suggests, so the tips are not meaningful to me. It's just alphabet soup.

Jesin

No problem. I think it might be possible for engines to state the nature of your mistake similar to how there are thematic tactics for mistakes, but they have not implemented, at least on chess.com. Most of the time the mistakes are obvious if they're major, or if they're not apparent immediately you can follow the engine line and it will eventually lead to an explanation (something like 5+ moves ahead where you lose a piece or something). Inaccuracies are harder to see, but they just require knowledge of theory. Weakening the pawn structures, etc

I recommend you watch some youtube videos of openings and game analysis, as they will explain the what and the why

You can check the show listings for your time zone, but the chess.com show, "Take your game to the next level with Coach Daniel" covers analyzing your chess games and he does an excellent game showing you how to use the chess.com options to make sense of your game. I think the next airing is Tuesday  8 Oct. I saw it earlier today and it was very useful to see how it goes through the game and uses the tools available on the site.

No YouTube video of this so we can play it back at our leisure?
