As a beginner, I really don’t like playing blitz

It makes me worse I feel. It seems to activate a different part of my brain than the slow methodical part I use for chess. Then when I go back to regular chess, I don’t do well at all. I blunder, I get tunnel vision, etc...all things that I’ve gotten MUCH better at since I first started playing. But after playing some blitz games I feel like I’m back at my first week in learning how to play chess. I don’t know why, but playing blitz takes me out of the zone and it’s uncomfortable. It messes me up and I can’t go back to regular chess until the next day. It also makes me a bit hyper, whereas regular chess winds me down. I won’t be playing blitz again anytime soon lol.

Anyone else?

In that article I have given you on other topic, it is stated that blitz is not really good for improving your game. If you don't care about improving to much, and just want to have fun, it's fine. If not, play 1 hour, or 30 minute per side games (15|10 is the absolute minimum, but it is probably not the optimal time control).

Blitz can hurt your chess in the long run. It is the same game, but at the same time completely different.

Anything faster than 10 minutes is just a mess at beginner level. Not even worth analyzing.

Better to stick with daily and some rapid imo

Blitz chess is better when YOU are better. You need to learn how to walk before you run.

A great way to put it! I will not play blitz until I get stronger in many areas of the game. Maybe it can help with time management but I share the same experience mninp.

Playing by reflex is not controlled by the same part of the brain has playing and thinking.

The brain stem, which consists of the medulla (an enlarged portion of the upper spinal cord), pons and midbrain (lower animals have only a medulla). The brain stem controls the reflexes and automatic functions.

The cerebrum, the large, outer part of the brain, controls reading, thinking, learning, speech, emotions and planned muscle movements like walking. It also controls vision, hearing and other senses.

When you think you improve that part of the brain that does the thinking.

When you play by reflex you improve the other part.

Same! I don't like blitz either.

Speed chess is fine if your goal is to have fun.

If you're serious about improvement, then slow time controls, and daily chess is the way to go.

Just keep playing Rapid and improve your game. My account is pretty new, but even the thought of Blitz shudders me. I know the horrors of tunnel vision and seeing winning moves one move too late. Now that I am getting better, I see my rating go up everyday ~20 points and it makes me so happy.

Actually spinal cord is the center of reflex action

I too steer clear of Blitz for the same reasons as mninp. Much prefer 30 minute Rapid games together with lessons & puzzles. IMO - at the beginner-intermediate level, you need more time to consider your attacking and defensive moves.

I don't play blitz nor bullet as well. In real life and apparently in chess, I don't do well under pressure. The only reason I play is to get my ratings up. My friends sht on my blitz and bullet ratings because they're so far behind my rapid.

As a beginner, I felt the same way. Blitz doesn't let me sit down and use my mind. I play emotionally rather than logically in blitz. Then after some research, it turns out blitz is mostly not recommended for beginners. The conventional  route is to play long games. Stick to Rapid.

Rapid is the way to improvement. Initially I struggled a lot with time even in Rapid cz I would need longer to work out attacks, but now I am able to finish most Rapid games with 5 mins on the clock. Also, the more you play, you will start seeing patterns and know the best moves intuitively.
