Thanks to everyone helping with my Beginner books post.

This is a little side-bar, you might say.

I just notice a lot of books by this author, Magnus Templar, with mostly good reviews. Most aimed at the beginner/novice, and some with a lot of instruction and practice in tactics, openings (white and defense), mid and end games. As well as some flashy, Destroy Your Opponents in 10 Moves type books....

Just wondering if anyone has used any of his books, and thoughts for the under 1000 rated value ?

Thanks

Unfortunately, while I have many chess books (way more than I have read), I don't have any of his. Reviews on Amazon are mixed.

If it was me, I would go with things like Seirawan's Winning Chess series, or Pandolfini's Ultimate Guide to Chess, or the three Back to Basics books (Openings, Tactics, Strategy).

I found this blog by Jeremy Silman the other day, and one quote stuck in my head: "You should look for dependable chess authors that never let you down". From that perspective my take on dependable chess authors is Seirawan, Silman, Dan Heisman, & Neil McDonald.

These are all covered in the excellent guide by @RussBell.
