Beginners Chess Puzzle

Theoretically it could be a legal position with 8 pawns one rank from queening and Nc7# actually being the move. That would also help explain the position of Black's Bg1 and Nf1.
jetoba, I'd love to see an explanation of how those eight pawns managed to get past the other side's pawns and end up on the other side of the board. I don't think it's possible.
cross-capturing, White's g-pawn started as an h-pawn and captured onto the g-file after Black 's pawn had moved past it. Black's f pawn made two captures to allow White's f pawn past it (one of those captures could have been White's g pawn . In the a and b files White and Black each had a pawn capturing off the file and then back on (one of those captures could have been White's c pawn.. That is three White captures and four Black captures with three Black pieces missing and five White pieces missing. Black's d pawn could have captured White's e pawn and both of the missing Black pawns could have promoted so that they could be captured by White's pawns.
