Bot ai

Hey people,

Just wondering if I'm being silly or not.

I've been playing against some ai bots whilst I'm on my dinner at work and I've noticed that sometimes they play normally and sometimes they play near perfect chess. I sit there contemplating how to advance without being down material and once I've found a move they make the near engine like perfect counter play 90% of the time.

I'm currently against Emir (1000), it feels every few games he blunders so bad it makes the game easy, no real middle ground.

Is the ai a little janky or am I missing something?

Edit: I was 1180 rated on another account I lost the password to with around 30-40 games.

That's pretty much how AIs work. Their base is a ~3000 engine, and the ways they use to make it play lower than that are "janky" as you say.

I've played engines where they make some hilariously bad move and now I'm winning.

And then later in the game I think for 10 minutes, calculate a deep line, and they sidestep the danger instantly. Incredibly inconsistent.
