Bots on Smartphone vs Online

I was getting absolutely crushed by Emir (Intermediate bot; 1000 rating) game after game after frustrating game on my smartphone.  I switched to my PC just to see if there was a difference, and oh boy there sure was.  I had no problems wiping the floor with Emir on my browser.   Is this normal?  Did I just get lucky?

Edit:  After a few games I can say there's just a decidedly big difference in the number of mistakes Emir makes on the PC versus my phone.

Same problem can't beat the bot from pogchamps 3 that is 600 rated it doesnt make any mistakes and on pc i beat the pogchamps 3 bot which is 1200 rated with ease. Also i feel like at 600 on pc i can push my pawn forward taking the rook and stuff just because the bot doesnt take the pawn back sometimes and on the phone there is no chance to get away with that stuff its a weird difference

This is pure speculation, but I recall reading (some time last year) that the default analysis engine on the apps is different to the web site (stockfish vs komodo). If that is true, then it might also be true that the bots use a different engine as well.

I have no evidence for this, it's just an idea.

siopalcakep

i think the bots rating are random

I played last night on my phone trying to beat the codemiko bot that is rated 600 and I have played more than 15 times and I can't seem to do it then on pc i play 1 game the bot lets me take all the pawns for free and then just blunders a queen by taking a pawn without protection. I'm on samsung galaxy S10.

yes the bots are very messed up at the moment. Completely off at the moment. i normally play the 1600 bots today I cannot manage the 600. My best win is at 2000 so a 600 should be a walk over.

I just took on Emir right now on my phone. It seemed fine (fine as in completely terrible). After a sensible first few moves it made blunder after blunder

not the experience i am getting, James, on the website no issue on the app they are scoring 98 accuracy with mistakes or inaccuracies at all. Something is weird?!

  • Just tried it again, as I realised I played the earlier game in the web browser of my phone. This one was in the app. His accuracy was 10 and was arguably even worse than the game this morning! Can’t really explain it but he seems as bad as usual 😂

lol, I'm loving the challenge but is a little worrying when the 250 bot can beat GM Hikaru when you battle them against each other. Maybe its and android thing or something in the cache that's messing up. I'm a mobile player, so I play 90% of my games on app, and 90% of my games are bots at the moment. So the change is very noticeable. But heyho :/

Glad I'm not going crazy. I play exclusively on the phone app, and starting 2 days ago, all of the beginner bots have become ridiculously good. I am a beginner, so this has been super annoying...but perhaps it is time I pony up and try playing some humans...

KnightChecked

I've noticed that sometimes they play true to their rating. Other times, they play quite strangely.

I played against Francis (2300) the other day, and he blundered away his rook in the first few moves. ??

tig_bitties_80

I'm glad others are noticing this too. About 4 or 5 days ago there was a distinct change in how bots are playing (at least on Android mobile). I used to crush Nelson and have good games against Antonio, now even Martin is beating with his mive accuracy over 90!?

JunHoWon

its crazy how they still didnt fixed it

RayvenOdinson

I noticed a change in the bots to!! android here as well. I was completely crushing the 1000 rated bot (can't remember his name) and now I can't beat him for the life of me.....

There's a thread about this here:

https://www.chess.com/forum/view/help-support/chess-bots-on-app-playing-way-above-their-reported-level

This includes a post from chess.com saying that there is an issue and they are working on it.

IpswichMatt

The issue is that the bots on Android are playing above their level.

Unless they're playing against James Coleman.

kindredsofa

I beat Pokimane, and Codimiko, and they were rubbish on my tablet.

Quantum_Robin

This issue is all fixed now!

siopalcakep

emir is pretty trash
