I suggest Jeff Coakley's books....his books are loaded with excellent chess instruction for young players (and, in fact, beginners of any age).....for example....

Hi
I am looking for books for an 8 year old, mid level ability. A medium level of English reading skills. They have learned tactics, the concept of controlling the centre, and some final mating positions. They are familiar with pawn promotion.
I would like to find a good tactics, end game, and mate in 1/2/3 books.
I'd like her to gain proficiency before playing and practising with others online.
They have learned to notate.
Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated.
Best wishes
Nick
