I’m thirteen and I have a rating of around 1000 is it possible for me to become a chess GM in five years and if so how long should I practice each day?

This is an old account and to the reason why five years I figure it will help me get into college

I think being a GM requires more than hard work, surely you need some natural ability in terms of thinking strategically ect.

This is a nice article on what it takes to become a GM.  ;-)

I don't get why some people are being rude here? He was just asking a simple question.

The Answer is No.

It is is almost impossible even for the brightest chess minds to be a GM in 5 years, Most people wouldn't acheive that goal.

But I tell you what, you probably could become a Master in 5 years if you worked really hard and had a lots of dedication, now that is a goal that is reachable...

Just now I looked up the answer on google and it said anywhere from 8-12 years for the Average GM to become a GM and this is just the average, sometimes it takes more time, sometimes it takes lesser time. However if I was going to give an estimate for the average player with average dedication, time, work ethic and skill  I would say anywhere between 10-20 years or more to become a certified GM.

Now I am not saying this to discourage you my friend, as you can still become a CM, NM, LM(Life Master for USCF), or FM probably in the coming years if you work very hard and have a lot of dedication to the game. So if you do this you should at get one of those titles mentioned. However unless you are gifted at the game(in which you can be, but have to play more to find out) chances are you will not be a GM in 5 years or less.

But I will say this, if you really are dedicated to the game and want to become a GM like you say, I suggest you get a coach, and if you can't get a coach study as much as possible and play as much as possible and see where it lands you. There are a bunch of people that would readily help you on this site free of charge, so don't be afraid to ask, but just know "when much is given, much is required." This quote may not be used in the right context, but I basically was saying, you have to work really hard, now it won't be easy, but truthfully told in life nothing is easy to gain for something such as a title as GM.

Hopefully this was helpful @FatherMackenzie649

It is not likely at all you could be a GM in 5 years. Rather rare for anyone to become a GM.

What Teacher of Pain said in #11.

I think OP in #1 should do his best and enjoy the journey.

@SeniorPatzer

I feel sometimes though were are looking deep into the journey and sometimes we need to take a few steps back, it is definitley possible for the OP to become a master but it just takes time, and the work and once that is sorted out, a lot of results will come.

But even so looking past that enjoying the journey is much better in my opinion as I feel like sometimes when you make goals you have to make a strict commitment and you are not free and that can be stressful and mentally challenging depending on the goal. In this case it is to be a GM in 5 years and looking past the chess part of it, not only is it a lot of work but it could do something to your mental health during the process and can make you stressed and doubtful if you don't reach the goal.

It is definitley reachable, but as a community and individuals we have to make the best plans for ourselves but also plans that are reasonable and effective and I think he will do great if he is up for the challenge but it will be tough on the road.

Even just for that I believe that doing your best and enjoying the journey is much more important because not only do you have freedom but also you won't be troubled mentaly if you are taking this very seriously as you say.(for you @FatherMackenzie649)

For the OP I hope you are doing well and are getting help from these posts and can reach your goal to the best of your ability, but like @SeniorPatzer said, doing your best and enjoying the journey is much better as it is something you can do with freedom and peace, yet putting such a high goal as a GM could be unhappy(if the goals are not met) and I would not like a fellow memeber to feel this way.

Nonetheless I am not here to discourage you, continue your journey and look up to your goals but remember it is ok to relax and then continue with that goal, just don't overdue it as more peace in your life, is much more important than any title, just trust me on this.
