chessmate help

Help !! Still a beginner , almost got the idea of moves etc but Chessmate completely throws me , if I do CM quite often it’s a fluke ! And when I think I’ve got it it’s wrong ! Surely there’s a dummy proof why of working it out - or do I just carry on - a lot of my recent games the opponent has resigned or time has run out
