Chess Square colors

Well just memorize that a1 is dark square and memorize that first and second rank is occupied by white pieces. For me it is easy to memorize that e1 is a dark square as white king goes to a dark square and black king goes to a light square.

At first you will say Nf3 instead of Nf6 because you are playing black pieces, but it's ok. Eventually you will get the hang of this. It is not an essential thing for improvement anyway, but it will come to you with more experience.

By the way, if you wish to improve your play, you might find this blog post interesting:

Learning the coordinates takes time but you'll get there. I've been playing 9 months and it's getting easier. For me, I think playing through GM games OTB helps. My board doesn't have coordinates so the constant repetition of working out where the pieces should go improves my visualisation.

I was taught as a child “white on the right” referring to the way your board is orientated, and queen on her own colour. White queen on white square, etc...
