Practical tip is try your best to not lose any material, not even a single pawn. Be very greedy.
Conceptual tip is it's all about piece activity. If your knights, bishops, rooks, and queen control many more squares than the opponent's, then you're usually ahead. More mobility means the piece is more likely to find a useful role later on (like attacking).
