How Can I Best Utilize Chess.com Resources for Learning?

I am a new chess player. I know how to set up the board and how the pieces move, and that is where my knowledge ends. A friend of mine got me interested in the game, and I'd like to improve. It looks like chess.com has a lot of resources that would be useful if I use ones targeted to my skill level: playing against other people, playing against a computer, lessons, tactics puzzles.

What would be the best way to make use of those resources? For example, which resource(s) should I put the most emphasis on? How should I prioritize them relative to each other? Any tips in general for how to improve as a new player?

I've written a guide on how to improve your game as a novice player:

Apart from this, I see that you are a diamond member here. The main point of diamond membership is to use videos on chess.com. Go through rules and basics section, afterword take a look at tactics, strategy and endgame sections as well. Do chess.com lessons at a pace that is comfortable for you as well.

That combined with what I've written in that guide will give you the opportunity to better your game. Best of luck.

Thank you! That's a helpful guide. Right now I have a trial membership so I can check out the features behind the paywall to see if it is worth paying.

You're welcome. happy.png

My guide is written in a way so you can do it without paying any money (if that is what you wish). You can surely get to some intermediate level for free, though you can decide it is fun for you and helpful to use some form of membership here.

So diamond membership - if you want to use video section. This is the only membership plan that will provide this (I think there are a few videos that are free, but most are only for diamond members).

The difference between gold and platinum is for instance in number of lessons per week and puzzles per day (if 25 per day is enough, then gold is great for you for instance).

In any case, tactical puzzles you should do, either here or somewhere else online or from a book (depends from your preference), tactical side of chess is important on every level, but it will help you at the start to avoid some easy tactical motifs by opponent and use some yourself. I've stated this in that article I've linked.

If you need help with anything else, feel free to ask. happy.png

playing against other people ++ good

playing against a computer ++ it is good for progress but bad for your ego: you will always lose

lessons ++ good

tactics puzzles. ++ very good

What would be the best way to make use of those resources? ++ start with a few tactics puzzles, play a 15|10 game, analyse it, do a lesson
For example, which resource(s) should I put the most emphasis on? ++ tactics both puzzles and tactics you find analysing your played games
How should I prioritize them relative to each other? ++ play > analysis > tactics puzzles > lessons
Any tips in general for how to improve as a new player? ++ most important tip: always check your intended move is no blunder before you play it
