How do you improve in 1-2 weeks ?

I know those like "analysis" and "puzzles" sort of thing but how can you really see your improvement in a few weeks. (I am playing in the upcoming 2021 Los Angeles Open Nov 6-7th). A few weeks from now. Is there any rating range I should be in if I follow those tips ?

Hi.  My name is Jessie Goodkind, and I am a chess coach based in San Francisco.

I would study strategy and tactics everyday.  Learn new concepts and apply them in

a slow game.  This will improve your game.  Avoid blitz since the time control is too fast.

Hello. This is my first time attempting chess. I’m familiar with some of the movements, but unfamiliar with the rest. Please how should I get better?

other than doing tactical puzzles, I would recommend watching the chessbrah series of building chess habits.  They give advice based upon what you should know at different ratings.

Play training games with the same time control as your tournament to get a habit of using all the clock time.

Are you related to Lauren Goodkind?

Improvement takes time and analyzing your games and doing puzzles help. I would also recommend reading chess books about improvement/strategy. I like the puzzle book "The Woodpecker Method" which gives you a program to follow to improve your pattern recognition. I recommend checking out archive.org's selection here with many old but good books on chess strategy. This is not a guarantee but it will help long-term

If you want to see a 'real improvement' in 2 weeks, I'd suggest picking up tic-tac-toe.

I've been playing chess for 30 years and I am still learning new things every game. Chess is too complex to get rapid improvement within 2 weeks. It's like playing the piano, you're not going to suddenly be playing really good if you just play the piano 2 weeks non-stop.

Now, if you're looking to get the best out of yourself for a tournament, there are ways to prepare. Doing tactics every day will get you nice and sharp. Maybe play a game with the time control you'll face, to get a feel for the amount of time you can spend. A strong player might look through his opening notes, to brush up on some of the things he might have forgotten. Apart from that, rest, exercise, and eating well can also help you during a tournament.

Hi Shan,

For quickest improvement, I think you've gotta:

1. Play games

2. Analyze those games

Only playing and not analyzing will lead to extremely slow improvement. Also, it can be tough to analyze games if you don't know how. If needed, get a good coach, teacher, or anyone who is able to help you learn how to analyze your games and effectively communicate to you what you need to improve on.

Tactics can be helpful, but they are only one part of the game. You need to analyze your games to quickly learn which parts of the game you need to improve the most.

Good luck in your tournament!

I wish you luck but this seems completely impossible.

You wont get from 200 to 700+ in just 10 days.

Sorry. Chess is a hard game.
