If the center is closed, you can undertake this sort of action as long as you control the lines on that flank.

If the center is open and you start pushing the Pawns in front of your King, you're going to get massacred.

Good control of a closed centre with little prospect of the opponent opening it up. The general rule of thumb is to meet an attack on a flank with a counter attack in the centre, with the aim of opening up lines to the king. If there is little prospect of lines being forced open then the king is safe. Seek flank play on the side where you control more space, preferably on the opposite side to your opponent, find a plan and commit to it. It can become a race against time so try not to be distracted by imagined threats from your opponent.

Also dangerous is if you castle opposite directions, you march pawns and give the opponent a nasty choice of taking them and opening rook lines onto the king, or not taking them and letting them invade.   All these ideas can be refuted, but many a player can't do it correctly esp in rapid games; such defense takes either experience, strong skills, or time to muddle through it.
