How many games per day? How long per game?

Looking for suggestions on how many games would be good to play and at what time controls for improvement from my current level.  I intend to analyze each game, and annotate as I play.

I could play a dozen blitz games per day, easily.  I did for a few months, and my blitz rating improved some, but my daily rating did not.  This was also before I knew about analyzing my games.  I could play rapid, say 10 minute games, and I think that would give me enough time to annotate during play.  I could probably play three of four of these per day, if not more some days.  It is a tempting thought because then I can still play a large volume of games with a bit more time to evaluate my moves.

What are your thoughts on how many games per day would be good to play and at what time control.  Thanks.

Play your daily games to study/improve.  This is where you have time to put the most thought/effort into improving.

Play your faster games to test your progress/just have fun

How many depends on your schedule/priorities

Here's my recommendation:

Play with a slow time control, such as G/30 or G/60.  You need time to think before each move.

Avoid playing blitz and bullet!

I also recommend you to hire a chess coach to analyze the games that you played.

Hello David,

I´m playing round about 3x 10 minute games per day and keeping round about 10 daily games open.

PerpetuallyPinned is totally right. Daily to study and faster to test.

Just keep in mind what you are playing actually. Sometimes I make quick moves (so not the best moves) in daily games like I´m doing in 10 minute games. So better start your daily play with the daily games. happy.png

In part it depends on you. But doing fewer things but doing them well is better than doing more badly.

I find that the longer I take thinking it over the better it is. Rushed moves leads to bad habits that are hard to break and that is one of my biggest problems.

Play as many games as you like.

Play 15+10 games until you lose one and then analyse the lost game.

It’s better to play 1 long game a day than multiple fast games. Instead of 3 10|0 games, try 1 30|0 game. You’ll get a whole lot more out of it.

I disagree. Bullet & Blitz games are much more dynamic

I agree with statement 1 long game better than many short ones. There is nothing wrong to play shorter games, but for learning purposes game with more time for position analysis is the best.
