How many puzzles should you do in a day?

My puzzle rating is not amazing but it has gone up over time, with that said how many should you do in a day and how long should you spend on each one evaluating everything before you move.

You have done more than 10,000 puzzles.

Whatever you have been doing in the last year seems to be working.

It appears that you do your puzzles quite rapidly.

It seems likely that you are guessing at the best moves without taking the time to calculate the variations all the way through.

You undoubtedly see through the calculations on some of them. It would be interesting to see what would happen to your rating if you didn't make a move until you were 100% or nearly 100% confident in your calculations.

I suspect I move too quick from bad habits I acquired. I would think I should be able to do much better if I thought longer.

10 a day should be enough, I progressed a lot by doing 15 a day. I did them in chunks 5 at a time. Also take your time to solve them ideally, 5- 6 min per puzzles.

I do 1 because that's about all I can figure out sad.png

"how many should you do in a day"
++ Just 4 is a good warm-up before you play. You can do more if you feel like it.
"how long should you spend on each one evaluating everything before you move"
++ enough time to find the correct answer.  Haste makes waste. There is no point in answering fast and failing. Also the time per puzzle should be less than the time per move in games you play. If you cannot solve a puzzle correctly in x seconds when you know there is a tactic, then you cannot play a move in a game in x seconds as then you do not even know if there is a tactic or not so you have to assume there is one and verify there is none.

it depends on what kind of puzzles they are

calc, attack, defend, endgame, mixed, etc

Hard to take time to solve the puzzles when you are rewarded more points for solving the puzzle quickly..

You can take all day to solve the puzzle and still get a minimum of 5 points.

Get a puzzle book. The puzzles here are not as good because they aren't human-approved. Also, the book will force you to calculate everything instead of just the first move because the computer will be there are so many winning ways so they end the puzzle but it doesn't mean you solved the puzzle.

The Woodpecker Method is a good puzzle book you should try (although it might be a little hard depending on your rating), but I've heard @laurengoodkindchess made a puzzle book on her website which is human approved and should be good for a beginner so I highly recommend you check it out

Versus the 12 points you get for completing it in less than 15 seconds or something

Less incentive to take your time..

Yeah dude, take waaaaay more time on your puzzles. What I do is I take as much time as I need, up til like 10 minutes, and I try not to make a move unless I know for sure that it is the right move. This simulates real game situations and forces you to calculate instead of just using intuition. As a rule of thumn, do not make a move unless you've seen the line all the way to the end and know for sure that it is right. Time is not relevant unless you get around 10-15 mins.

I agree. This is good advice.

My puzzle rating isn't astounding but ok for an average 9 year old, my teacher says.
