how to avoid losing my rook

Check out the Gotham Chess YouTube video on the traxler, it turns the fried liver into chopped liver.
The standard defense is 1. ... d5 2. exd5 Na5 3. Bb5+ c6 4. dxc6 bxc6, but there are others. The Traxler is a very sharp line and if you enter it, you will have to know exactly what you are doing. In the Traxler line White can also opt for Bxf7+ and just prevent Black from castling.
A move that is not theoretically sound, that "allows" nf7 but strongly favours bf7 instead is Qe7, but the main line is annoyingly complex and not worth it since it eventually still requires d5
harriw, in #5 is correct. There are wild tactical lines, but the one he cites is the most reliable line for Black; he gives up a pawn for good compensation. Less experienced players are surprised to learn that when they play 3...Nf6, they are offering a pawn sacrifice!

there are a few things you could play
the main line goes like this
you could also play something else like the Traxler counterattack or the Ulvestad variation but they're a little bit too risky for me
