how to become more consistent

Hi guys I was just wondering if anyone had any tips in consistency. I do mostly 10 minute games but I am often very inconsistent. If I lose 2 or 3 games in a row it often turns in to 6 and I just lose concentration but it is very rare for me not to be dramatically increasing or decreasing. Is there any solution to this especially given my age (13) my rating varies between 650 and 850. thanks!

Hey Sam!

I often find myself getting frustrated after a few losses. That frustration usually leads me to move without thinking, because I want to crush my opponent, and then I make more mistakes, then I lose more games, and then I get more frustrated. Or, another common thread is that when I'm very tired, my ability usually goes down. I like, however, to play chess for fun, or during downtime, and I can often lose a few games when I'm exhausted because my calculation and ability to see threats is diminished. Regardless, my remedy is the same, which is to take breaks. If you notice that your starting to get on a loosing streak, and your getting frustrated, or if you notice that your game isn't as sharp today as it usually is, just take a break for a few hours, or even for the day. Then, come back to the board when your fresh and ready to play good chess.

Hope this helps!

Hi,

Don't play too many games at once, I suggest limiting it to around 1-4 per session. It is better to play games many times per day, rather than a lot at once. Make sure to analyze them for best results!

You are doing very well, good luck!

To help you with consistency, I suggest longer time controls for each game, so you have time to think.  Ask questions before each move, such as "If I move here, is it safe?" and "Can my opponent safely capture a piece?".  Asking, "If I move here, where is my opponent going to move?" is also helpful.  I also suggest doing basic tactic puzzles to, to help you recognize specific patterns.    I offer a free eBook for beginners on how to improve their chess game: www.ChessByLauren.com.

I hope that this helps!

If you wish to improve, it is better to play longer games than 10 minutes per side, and it is best if you don't play too many per day. You will get tired or angry at yourself after first or second loss and you will play worse.
