How to Choose a Move

Sort:
WALKINGLOSS

I've always had trouble doing this. I ask myself about the checks, threats, and captures in the position, and ask how to improve the position of my pieces, but according to the engine, some problem is arising in my thought process which causes me to make blunders while using this system. Can someone give me advice on how to choose a move? Thanks!

There is a 3 step procedure.

During opponent's time: make general considerations about the pawn structure, pawn move to aim for or to avoid, about trades: what trades to aim for or to avoid, about the end game: who would win if (nearly) all pieces were traded?

During your turn: what are the candidate moves? What happens after candidate move 1? After 2? After 3?... Which is then the best move?

Before you play your selected move: check it is no blunder.

Here are some questions you can ask before moving:

1) If I move here, is it safe?

2) If I move here, where is my opponent going to move?

Always pay attention to the captures, checks, and threats of you and your opponent.

I hope that this helps.
