How to improve on Blitz time management?

Hello!

I'm 1200-1300 in Rapid, and I recently started playing Blitz, where I'm consistently stuck at under 900. What I have noticed is that my play is generally stronger than most of my opponents', but I very often lose on time. In most of my losses, I either blunder because of time pressure or I get flagged in a winning position. Are there any methods or techniques or exercises for improving my time management, or should I just simply "play faster"? How does one play faster without playing irresponsibly?

I think maybe one part of the problem is that my calculations are too slow. For example, I don't exactly "trust" counting defenders, so I always simulate the trades in my head ("takes, I take, takes, I take, etc") and draw lines, which must obviously waste time. Other than that, I can't think of anything I can do to play faster without sacrificing stability. Wouldn't I blunder more if I play faster?

Any input will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Blitz relies heavily on pattern recognition as you can’t calculate as much or you’ll consume to much time. So increase knowledge+ patterns and you’ll play faster without losing accuracy. Additionally you can play with increment, even 2 seconds/move can make the difference from you losing on time to winning.

Suggest you try blitz 5/5- 5 minute time clock with 5 seconds added for each of your moves

Playing with increment (bonus time per move) may be the way to go

You should gradually decrease the time control eg 5|5 like Peter has suggested. Turn to lower timings once you are comfortable with the control.

Of course, if you are playing at even longer controls (eg 30 mins per side), you should not hurry to blitz immediately, but if you wish to play shorter controls, trim the rapid control to 15|10 followed by 10 mins per side first.
