Introducing 4yr old to the game

I've got a 4yr old (our youngest of 3), extremely intelligent for his age bracket, doesn't start school until 2022 but is already doing maths/english at a grade 1/2 level. He has his own tablet and a lot of his learning has been by playing educational type games on it, essentially he'll pick it up and play when he wants to and put it down and do something else when he's done.

Does anyone have any app suggestions that I could subtly put on his tablet that he can discover and play around with, sort of like giving him the opportunity without forcing it upon him so to speak.

I've seen Chess4Kids, does anyone have any thoughts on that? Or any other apps that could be suggested.

Thanks, those books look pretty good, unfortunately Amazon doesn't ship them to my location (Australia), there are some other books though available on the local Amazon site I'll check out.

And yeah, I'm not trying to (or will try to) push him to be a GM or anything, he watches me play now and I'd like to be able to give him the opportunity for some sort of exposure that he can do on his own, I'd even be happy with some sort of colouring book that runs through what the pieces are and how they move ... I feel a book opportunity right there if there isn't one like that already wink.png

Start with learning endgames of course 😁. Put only the two kings on the board, on their starting squares. Explain how the king moves. The game is that he has to block your king from getting to his back rank. Teach him the opposition and out flanking. You dont have to call it that and think about how to explain it and the rate which you introduce the ideas. ChessKids have some great content for kids. Its terrific fun. For example, they talk about the Kings having Stinky Breath so they keep one square apart. Every time you get direct opposition, "oh no, stinky breath". You dont necessarily have to start with chess, use the chess pieces and rules that govern them to make up other games, keep it fun and entertaining.

I need to teach myself endgames first, I just royally screwed up a mate in 2 by botching the 1st move cry.png

On a separate note, I've done some searching and found this .. https://aus.grandado.com/products/big-size-chess-set-garden-chess-set-92x65-cm .. it might be a good place to start.

Great fun. If he gets bored with the chess you can use them for skittles with a football.

My 2 1/2 year old grandson KAI moves the horsey to Nf3.

Notice that he moved the other horsey twice to NC3 and NB5.

                          That was 18 years ago, now he's in college . . .

Here we are playing a full game and he is yelling "ATTACK" . . .

Four of my grandchildren know how to play chess to some degree . . .

Two granddaughters didn't care for it . . .

One grandson Logan won his school elementary championship three years in a row . . .

So some kids can learn at an early age . .

We should have that rule in tournement chess. Whenever a piece is captured players should shout "Attack, Attack, Attack".
