Is chess supposed to be fun?

I'm a very middle aged man who has never really played chess before (other than learning how the pieces moved and how to do/avoid a scholar's mate).   I started playing 10 minutes games a few weeks ago, and have gotten up to 700 elo.  I never played timed games before, and as someone who knows very little about openings or lines, it feels a bit more instinctual having some time pressure.  I've obviously learned and improved, and have a fledging concept now of how to develop "ideas". I'm even having intrusive chess thoughts for last few days.  But everytime I start a game, it's a pit of despair.  I've won more than I lost, but almost always a case of waiting for opponent to make a mistake.  Every loss typically ends with a "how could I be so stupid."

So my question, is that the game?  Does it get better?

Bad sign that you have to ask. frustrated

If you play against people with your own rating / strength, you will get 50% wins and 50% losses. Minus whatever draws you get. Thats obvious, isnt it ?

But its very interesting that someone who hasnt played chess as a child easily reaches so easily 700 rating on chess.com. There are people who have thousands of games but are staying at 400 persistently.

No, it doesn’t get better, that’s the game.

I think with one possible small improvement: turn ‘how could I be so stupid’ in ‘how exactly did this happen?’.

I would say it gets better. Just set a goal, read some books, take help from some online resources, watch tournaments and after a while it will get addictive. But of course , there will be time when you will just want to delete everything and get done with chess . Take a break and hop back , and probably the upward curve will resume. Look at Tyler1 rise. He plays cow opening ( not anything serious like Sicilian) and is already at 1900 .

Chess gets fun after some time, when u learn new things, play good games and good moves, sure we will still lose some games and think why did I do this mistake, but the feeling after winning several games in a row is just awesome.

"Is chess supposed to be fun?" ++ Yes.
'Chess, like love, like music, has the power to make men happy' - Tarrasch
'Intellectual activity is perhaps the greatest pleasure of life;
chess is one of the forms of intellectual activity' - Tarrasch

"I started playing 10 minutes games" ++ Better play 15|10.

"I've won more than I lost" ++ Then you played too weak opponents.

"waiting for opponent to make a mistake" ++ That is the essence of chess.

"Every loss typically ends with a how could I be so stupid." ++ Blunder check before you move.

"Does it get better?" ++ The game gets better once you weed out blunders from your play.

Fun wouldn’t be the right word for it, at least for me. There’s the socialisation element over the board and maybe one can chat online but I certainly haven’t. But about the game itself the most positive feelings/thoughts have just been awe and that’s beautiful and enjoying the positions thinking about them.

I'm guessign you are feeling like the time controls are just too quick, luckily there are longer time controls to give you more time such as 15|10 or 30|0. Also the reason why chess is so fun to me is not because I am just playing a bunch of games, rather it is improving my own play that i find fun.

As another newbie, I feel you. I do find a lot of things fun about chess. Solving puzzles is enjoyable. Watching chess content, both silly and educational, is enjoyable. Learning about tactics, strategy, and the things many advise beginners not to worry about like openings is enjoyable. I also enjoy playing against the computer (which I know everyone also advises beginners not to do).

But actually playing other people just feels like taking an exam I haven't prepared for, and even when I win I feel more relieved than happy or satisfied. I have to force myself to actually play. So, sometimes I wonder why I'm sticking with a hobby where I don't enjoy a key part of it, but I'm not ready to give it up yet.

Yeah i think very important thing that is not talked about is when its time to step away from chess. At the end of the day chess is meant to be fun, if you simply do not enjoy it and its just not for you. dont play it. its a game that supposed to be fun, if you miss that key aspect its time to move on to another hobby.

I'm a bit disappointed the OP doesnt actually comment on his own thread.

No. It’s an eternal cycle of unbridled joy followed by crushing despair and frustration. One day you’ll be winning like a GM the day after you’re being annihilated by players 100 ELO less than you and you’ll want to punch yourself in the face because you can’t understand how or why.. Welcome to Chess.Com. Get used to it..

I think chess gets far more interesting once you hit about 1000-1200 Rapid. That's around when hanging pieces stop happening every game, meaning that games are decided based on tactics or strategy, instead of feeling like every game you won was your opponent throwing the game, and every game you lose was some incredibly dumb mistake. However you start raising your own expectation of what is a 'good game' so it becomes a wash.

However if you want to have fun, I highly recommend you have an account where you aren't trying to rating climb and just enjoy those games, separate from your rating climb account. Having 100% of the games you play have stakes can suck the fun out of it.

Unfortunately I think by the rules of chess.com one usually can only have one account.

The exception is teaching accounts for titled players, like ohnomyrosen by Eric Rosen.

Chess.com allows 2 accounts IIRC. Also you can have an account on chess.com and another on lichess. Lichess is my screw around account.

If you want to have fun and just "fool around," try playing the computer opponents. You can choose any level from complete tyro to GM. There are no time controls; you can choose different levels of help (or none), and you can analyze the games afterwards. And, yes, chess is a lot of fun--but not necessarily fun playing other people. That's going to carry a modicum of stress no matter how good you get.

"There are three solutions to every problem: accept it, change it, or leave it. If you can’t accept it, change it. If you can’t change it, leave it."

  1.  Roll with it and understand that any competitive endeavor causes stress. In fact, the stress (excitement) may be the point for some.
  2.  Study to improve, try different time controls or Daily Games, play some OTB with friends and then analyze the games to understand better.
  3. There's always checkers...cry

Chess is fun IF you don't expect to win. Expect to put up a good fight and make them earn it. If they don't, then be happily surprised that you won.

Play like everyone is going to beat you. Develop your pieces, look for forks, pins, forced moves, etc. Don't relax and think you have them beat..... until you do.

700 is good for not learning in childhood.

BTW I have chat on and I have never had someone talk to me during a game, not even the daily games.

After drifting back down to 650, I played two games today, played great, felt smart. Started a third, totally was dominating... made one bad move with king at end and got mated.

I'm going to burn my house down.
