Is it better to play as black or white?

I’ve known how to play for a long time, and I always chose white so I’m first, but now I’m thinking, is it the best option? I usually play on the defense, which makes black better, but what do you think?

It is an accepted fact that White has a small advantage inherently by moving first. So with good play, White should be "better" to play. Keep in mind that this is more characteristic of high-level play, and this should not dissuade you from enjoying playing with the Black pieces in general.
