Is playing on one's phone a bad idea?

I play my worst games on my phone; but still use it more than any other format due its convenience. Short time frames are particularly strewn with mistakes. What device to you play on most and what are the pros and cons for your game?

I think the whichever way you play most will become most comfortable. I use iPhone app most of time. PC is better than app, all on one screen and more details. On app board disappears for chat view. Web based game analysis very much better too.
I am nervous about playing on real board, I have not opportunity since I began playing here. Three-dimensional chess without legal move dots 😳

Real board really is the best. I seem to do worse when playing on my phone, but sometimes it's just more convenient. Mostly I play on pc version as it is more detailed and the UI is just better, also it's bigger so it's easier to concentrate, and it really does make a difference. However getting used to playing exclusively online will really destroy your vision when playing over a real board.

That is sadly true, I always feel like I can remember what I learned When playing online, but When I play with a real chess Set I happen to forget Everything.

To answer the question, I really think that playing on a phone can hinder one's strenght. Because the board and pieces are too Small, it can alter the overall visiom of what's happening.

I think your brain works differently on board and devices so it affects your games.

Phone is fine in Daily games.

And in solving puzzles.

I agree we think differently when playing online and over a board and as I rarely get a chance to play with a board; I find when I do I'm nervous with the unfamiliar format and often play badly.

You got the point, when you are used to your online games and you move to board, your confidence might get busted.

oh yes, you are right, the more i play it is less significant the difference, it has been from my experience

I think it's more of a thing where your brain works differently with 2d and 3d, even though you are visualizing the same thing your brain treats them separately. But I'm not a neurologist so take it with a pile of salt.

After enough practice you don't even need to look at the board. Some players just look to the side or at the ceiling, like Alexei Shirov.

I also believe this to be true and is particularly the case with less experienced players like myself. 2d vs 3d does require us to think differently. As for confidence; of course this has a huge bearing on how we play. We can be intimidated by aggressive confident play and become flustered and blunder.

If one does not take seriously his Online ratings, playing on phone is convenient and practical. Chess anytime anywhere.

And to be honest, it is comfortable to play on your phone or study chess in your phone, some might think that real boards works better with your brain, i just thought about it and noticed that it is different for every person, it is your choice and comfort.

I think you've answered your own question. I don't have a cell phone. Yes, I'm a dinosaur. I just use a laptop (so a late period dinosaur). grin.png

I have constant mistouches on my cell.

I lose with mate in one due to  mistouches: bogus.
