Is there a way to move up in ranking in bigger chunks

I believe the answer to be no, but I do wish that one was able to gain say, 50 ranking points in a single win against a player 300-400 higher.  In my case I just started playing on 15Dec and immediately tanked in the rankings (558).  Now I am playing much better (702) after learning the game a bit, but it is going to take me a very long time to crawl up to respectability only gaining 8 or 10 point with each win.

I do have it set, so that I am quite often facing players up to 400 points ahead of me, but it is still very slow going.  It is a fun climb, but I feel that if I just started over with a new account I could be at about 1000 and hang there instantly.  I want to keep my original account though to see my true progress and journey, rather than gaming the site.

Not sure if there is any advice to give here other than be patient and if you are truly getting better then good things will happen, but I thought it would be interesting to hear people's opinions on the matter.  My current wish is that if I were to prove that I can consistently play with people above my ranking then my ranking would grow to match theirs more quickly.

Thanks!

It's hard to know for sure but I would guess that you will stabilize closer to 800 than 1000.

This is based on your 2-7 record against players rated 800 and above.

The ratings just help you find good matches.

A lot of those matches you're looking at are on the very first days I started.  Presently I am 10-3 over the last week which would indicate that I am not getting the best matches right now.  I also feel like I am way better than I was a week ago as is the usual learning curve for a newbie I suspect.

Therefore I think it is tough to say right now where I will stabilize since I just started and am still learning.  Undoubtedly I will plateau and start to go 50-50 on matches, but I'm not sure when that will be.  I hope that isn't at 800.  And hopefully I'll keep at it and will have good progress to report.

Thanks for the feedback.

Your points per win may improve. It's not just based on the rating difference. The algorithm also takes into account how confident it is that your rating is correct. This is the Glicko RD number in your stats.

But the point adjustments go down the more you play.

It will all even out since if you are under rated you will beat players of your rating and then face players of a higher rating. I guess one technique for getting it all at once is enter into a tournament. I am frequently paired with players as low as 1200 or as high as 2000 (I'm around 1700). Besides being fun, it is a good way to test yourself against players that are objectively stronger than yourself that you wouldn't be able to play if you just entered into the normal pool

can someone tell me how you select a preferred rating range for your opponents?

ChampoftheBepoCamp

The reasonable rating range to aim for is 1400+ rapid in a few months, which is the 90% percentile but not that great in the grand scheme of things. I got to +1300 in a week rapid from 1027 with the bird's eye opening (f4) and the preferred dutch defense as black and the sicilian which is not my ideal and has the lowest winrate for me. With no study or membership I grind out the wins and am pushing for 1400+, to be fair I was playing tons of blitz and I always get 3-4 minute up in my rapid game and my blitz rating was higher and I stopped playing rapid a while back but nonetheless this is in a 3 month span so. THE POWER OF BIRD, I am jealous of you diamond membership, I have praying to the FSM for a diamond membership but the FSM seems too busy mind controlling me into making blunders instead. But I got the revelation from the FSM that the f pawns first move is best play and look at my ratings. FEAR THE BIRD

rapid is a blunderfest, and it has its own rating.  I am not good and am 1800 rated, because I have an uncanny talent to make unsound moves that screw people up when they don't have the time to unravel it.  It does not translate at all to slower, more thoughtful play.  Its not 'improvement' to have a good rapid rating, it just means you are quicker on your feet than average rather than better at chess.   The 300 point drop for my daily rating shows that the BS I do in rapid does not actually work!

Still not sure where to find my RD rating.  I am now at 816.  I have beaten 3 people over 1000 in the last few days and each time I only go up abut 13 points.  At this rate, to get to 1000 I essentially have to play only players over 1000 for the next 15 matches and 15-0.  Obviously that's not gonna happen, so it continues to be a very, very long and slow climb.  It's a fun and rewarding climb, but I keep hoping for a bigger jump somehow.

if you go on a winning streak you'll start gaining more points as the mmr of your opponents will increase as well.

I have two friends who are 800 rated in this app and I absolutely roll them each time we play. it isn't even a contest. if you were truly a 1000 player you wouldn't currently be hard stuck. Once you reach the appropriate skill level you'll understand.
