Do you analyze your own games? Could imagine that could help, maybe it's just one or two things holding you back and if you find those things, I could imagine you'd improve very quickly then. Do you bring out your queen too early and she gets pushed around? Developing your pieces quickly? Protecting your king (castling, keeping pawns close)? Keeping a good pawn structure in general?

Can’t get my rating past 800
Seriously, I let my dog play online sometimes and she's rated 950. Granted she's very smart for but she's still a dog.
Lzolz! Touché!

Whoa, lots of input here for you dude. IMO, to put it as simply as possible. Just pursue what you enjoy about chess and don't worry about your rank. If you don't enjoy grinding out lessons and puzzles then don't. Personally, I like analyzing games from GMs that I like. Thats how I learn. Most recently I enjoyed the Kasparov/So game from a few years ago. it was fun to watch and try to figure out. Just find where you fit in with chess and enjoy it there. If you truly aspire to be 1800+ there's more than enough adequate resources available to get you there.. you just have to have the dedication.

At that rating I really think you should avoid Blitz, it's just addicting and will just send you on a downward spiral. Play longer time control and focus on learning and the quality of game play. Don't play solely for a win and for the sake of rating.
Play rapid and play to improve. Try to play your very best and study the game afterwards.
Edit: Didn't see this was an older, bumped thread.

Yes indeed, an old thread. That said, avoiding blitz games was a piece of advice that I took on board - and it certainly helped me to improve my game a little.
I remember writing that original post after losing a ton of blitz games - believe it or not, I didn't play anything other than blitz when I first discovered this site.
Thanks for the tips and comments!
I also found that taking the lessons on here also improved my playing immensely.
