Losing on Time (Blitz)

I always find myself with < 30 seconds in Blitz games while my opponents will have 3-4 minutes left on their clocks. Always lose on time or rushed errors. What can I do to improve on this?

It’s simple. Stop playing Blitz, instead play longer time controls and you will give yourself time to think and strategize, which I daresay is the purpose of chess.

You cannot view blitz games the same way as you would for rapid and classical games! Time plays a huge factor in blitz games. Given the time constraint, you have to make more efficient use of your time in blitz.

Besides, if you take too long on a move, your opponent can capitalise on this by thinking out their moves during your time.

Eric is correct. I guess I was just trying to convince you to improve at chess 😂

Try playing 5+5, i find it to be plenty of time. But i will say i didnt play any blitz until about 6 months ago after i finished a couple lifetime repitiore books. It helps being able to blitz out the opening.

Hi,

You have to understand that speed chess relies much more on your known patterns and knowledge and less on calculating and evaluation. Newer players will always struggle with either making many bad moves in speed chess or poor time management because their knowledge and patterns will naturally be lower than more experienced players. Honestly if you want to improve your blitz game, you improve your chess skills. If you know many patterns and opening ideas, you can play them much more quickly and time efficiently.  It is cliché saying, but it is completely true. If you have mastered your openings, then you will always be able to blitz off the first 8-10 moves and achieve good positions with little time off your clock, and if you have a better memory of various patterns, you will move easily spot tactical and thematic strategic ideas with little thought or calculation, they will just appear obvious to you in the positions. This is my opinion and advice for you then in regard to speed chess, grow your intuition and experience with your chess before playing speed chess a lot.

But you are correct too! The OP needs more time in games if he finds himself always in big time trouble.
