Watch older GMs if you are a beginner. Paul Morphy is a must. Also Capablanca, Lasker, Tarrasch. Watching modern GMs play without really understanding basic principles could have a negative effect on your progression. For instance a lot of new players just go straight for someone like Mikhail Tal, try to replicate some crazy play in their own games, and then lose because they didn't understand something as basic as king safety and castling.
I've always wanted to learn chess and when the cat woke me up at 4:00 am I took it as an opportunity!
I'd learned the basics and won a few games against the computer which I was very happy about. But I'm still struggling to check againist real players.
Watching Magnus and some of the grandmasters' play is amazing and is helping me learn new techniques. Does anyone know of any good videos to watch for a beginner?
Thanks!
