Multi-attack / Fork

This is a puzzle for beginners and purely meant to teach basic tactics

Welcome, today we will discuss the topic of multi-attacks, which are also called forks. In this tactic, you attack multiple pieces at once, so that you can be sure to capture at least one of them. These pieces can be non-kings, as well as kings. Take a look at the following position. What is the obvious multi-attack or fork you can perform?

This is a classical one that can occur in a lot of openings. A downside to this specific one is that you cannot move the knight without it being captured, for now. Now note that you do not often have the pleasure of having such a position. To obtain this position, you have to make sure the knight doesn't get captured along its journey towards the backrank and also make sure the knight cannot be captured when it performs its multi-attack/fork. Another problem that can occur when performing a multi-attack or fork in general, is that one can escape it by putting your king in check or threatening your queen or something else. Can you see in the following puzzle how you can escape the multi-attack/fork your opponent performed?

One can also move the rook to H8 to protect the knight, but note that the answer in the puzzle is better in case the opponent wants to trade the bischop with the knight and it is not beneficial for you. It could be that that leaves for a better play, not sure, matter of opinion I also think. We can see that the multi-attack or fork is very powerful as long as it is performed carefully.

Thanks for reading, I hope this helped happy.png

I whipped this up to show that you can also Multi-Attack with a discovered check.
Mate in one.

Nice! Technically this is not a multi-attack but a multi-check but still great to see

It’s good to check before you make a fork if they can get out of it with a check

I really liked this type of fork combination

Ok, it was a bit contrived, but black to play and win a knight.

Hint, you cannot fork a knight with a knight, but you can fork any other piece with a knight.

What is the solution? Cant figure it out rn. At first I thought knight c4, but then white can just take with the pawn and still protect the knight

Ahhhhh I finally see it. So you can take the knight cause if they grab your queen you can fork the queen and king

Good job.
