Whatever color you play, remove your Queen before your first move.
My wife wants to play chess!

Wow.
My wife has been seeing me play on chess.com and tonight said I should set up a board at home so we can play together.
She's never played chess. but we play other board games together...
So where do I start teaching her chess... I'm not such a hot chess player, but how do you play against a beginner to help them learn? If I win every game it would be discouraging.
Queen and 2 rooks odds.
Also teach her how to checkmate with queen alone king and rook vs lone king.

First, congratulations! Beyond that, teach her the basics and everything you know. Get her going on chess.com and show her what's available for lessons, puzzles, etc. Play together whenever you can and when either of you learns something new show the other!
Don't let your wife play chess with you !!! She will invade your personal sacred chess kingdom and lead an assault on your free reign 🤣🤣🤣

That is a great idea that I will incorporate with younger players. Thank You!
Use to do something similar except we would turn the board around every five moves.

Set her up with an account of her own on here, perhaps? Teaching her is all fine and well, but nothing beats experience. And as others have pointed out the learning tools on here and certainly pretty good too. Lichess is also nice, with unlimited tactics for free.
As for how to play against her in an encouraging way, there's uneven time controls, I suppose. You could start with something like 10|0 or 5|5 and shave some time off your clock for each consecutive win until things get interesting. I suggest longer time controls because those are better to learn from.
I also recently noticed the site can give you automated odds based on rating differences. I haven't tried it that much myself yet, but that might be interesting? They're probably best for bullet or something of that sort, though

Merry, Merry Christmas everyone!

A full-fledged chess game is good exposure, after the game you should explain more in-depth of movement and other chess mechanics. Obviously don't play the game like you're playing against a GM, try to keep the game of chess as a casual chill game.

I just realized this thread started almost 2 years ago by a guy who hasn't even logged in in almost a year. Waste of time. D'oh!

My brother showed his wife how to play and, after about six months, he could never beat her in a game again. His ego took a hit, lol..... but he manned up and is proud of her. She went on to win some local tournaments. It's a great game for everyone - don't keep it to yourself. ;-)
