Nagging Problem, Part II: Blindness

Time and again I keep getting beaten by opposing checkmates being set up that I continually fail to see.  I study my own moves for blunder potential and reason out squares to move to in sequence, mapping out a plan of attack in my mind.  But I never and I mean NEVER seem able to grasp what my opponent is trying to do, until it's too late and I lose.  This may be less of a mental discipline issue and more of a problem with my brain and how it tracks things (or in this case, fails to track).  Really not sure how to fix this...

Anyone else here struggling with an inability to see an attack being set up against you?

I see you do a lot of puzzles.  I would think that Puzzle Rush would be good training to see elementary mates.

Have not tried the Rush aspect, but I will give it a go.

Oh, I am often caught by surprise because I'm focusing on my attack, meanwhile failing to see what my opponent is doing. I'm getting better though. One thing that helped me was going over checkmate patterns. This link was very helpful.

36 Checkmate Patterns That All Chess Players Should Know – CHESSFOX.COM

It helped me in two ways. (1) It made me more aware of the need to coordinate moves between my own pieces, and (2) it made me a bit more alert to potential checkmate threats from my opponent.

I re-visit the link often to review these checkmate patterns.

Bishops are just invisible to me.  Knights are no problem, but I just can't see bishops.  Practice more, good luck!

Your skills are improving! What happens is you have mastered your old skills and are on a new level! Your old level you don't blunder don't hang pieces etc etc. In your new level you have to realize that your opponent wants to win too, this means repeating lines but with different branches to find your favorite lines using gambits to the point of mastering ( realize that opponent has to defend) and paying attention to your own defense even as you attack your opponent

Recently I have been winning a few, but my overall performance has been poor.

Eyes I am embarrassed to tell you that, in addition to my defensive blindness, I am still hanging pieces and I am still blundering.  I know better but in a live game, I get so nervous that my hands shake and I struggle to see clearly.  I thought playing more would help but it's still bad. 🙁
