Need help with stalemates and draws

I am new to chess and I am having real trouble understanding and recognizing stalemates and draws. When I think I am fixing to check, the game stops and says it was either a stalemate or draw. I don't know what to do. Any help would be appreciated.

A stalemate is a particular kind of draw.  A stalemate occurs when a player does not have any legal moves, and the player's king is not in check.  You can read more about it here: https://www.chess.com/terms/stalemate-chess

You can can also check out the full support article for the other kinds of draws:

There are drills for checkmating in endgames, you can practice king/queen or king/rook there.

Always do the move in your head first and then ask yourself what your opponents response is.  If your move put them in check and they have no where to go then it's checkmate.  But, if you did not put them in check and they have no where to go, then it is stalemate(draw).

Also know it is stalemate if they have no pieces left and you just have a minor piece.  You can't checkmate with just a minor piece, so again its a stalemate draw.

As suggested, find out the difference between a checkmate and a stalemate. And just practice....when you start playing chess it's normal to end up in a stalemate while it could have been a checkmate. Just learn from it. Sometimes you will also draw against an opponent who messed up a potential checkmate against you happy.png And then you laugh happy.png

The game of chess comes with moments of frustration but also with joy.
Just keep playing.
