Welcome to chess.com, and here's hoping you have many years of exciting play and learning ahead of you. Now, as opinions number in the millions, forgive me if I add my voice to the many you're going to hear about how to improve, etc., etc. So here goes:
1) Spend a few  hours just exploring the site. Check out puzzles, puzzle rush, master games, lessons, chess variants, live play, computers, and anything else you can click on. You don't have to necessarily jump into any of these right away, but get a feel for what the site provides. And read some articles under Learn>Articles.
2) Take some basic lessons (if you're allowed to as a free member). They range from the very basic (how the horsey moves), up to pretty advanced. A great learning tool.
3) Jump into playing as soon as possible; don't delay. I think you have to be a paid member to access the bots (computer opponents), but don't let that keep you from playing some games. In live chess don't play ANYTHING under 10 minutes per side, and preferably longer. Check out daily chess also. There you can choose to play at the rate of 3 days per move--or even longer, so you really have time to think.
4) Go to puzzles from you very first day, and work at solving puzzles every day you're on the site. I think, as a non-paying member, you get 5 per day.
5) Finally, seriously consider a paid membership. I'm not shilling for the site here, but for about 20 cents a day (platinum) you unlock all kinds of cool features that, once you have them, you just won't want to be without.
Happy Chess!
