Hi all. So I've recently started playing chess. I played somebody today that resulted in a draw. However, I clearly won and don't understand how the result was anything but a win. Please see picture.

Can anyone explain why this was a draw please ?

Thank you.

I was black and the last move of the game was me moving queen g5-g6

It's a draw. Whites king has no legal moves. It's called stalemate. Next time leave the queen on g5 which traps the king but is not stalemate because he can shuffle between h8 and h7 so has legal moves. then bring your king or another piece over to help deliver mate with Qg7. Google King + Queen vs King endgame to find plenty of videos on the technique.

This one and the rook roller are two essential checkmate techniques for beginners to master. You will also find the in the lessons section on here.

I fully understand. Thank you. I thought me moving there would make it check mate as the opposition king would not be able to move. My bad I guess.

sorry I should be clearer. whites king is not in check and has no legal moves.

B1gDrew

Yes I understand. I could have left my queen on g5 and waited 14 seconds to win... Stupid me

MarkGrubb

yes. the king needs to be in check and have no legal moves for checkmate. it's an important lesson to learn. you wont do it again 😁. we all learned it the same way.

it is stalemate which means that the king has no legal moves, notice that every king move leads to the king being captured by the queen so he can't do anything so it's a draw. fun fact: if white would had a single pawn that could move it would not be stalemate because he can move the pawn so learn this quote: "when you are winning in chess, let at least one piece that is not the king to be alive" wink.png
