Open / half-open File & the outpost on it: has it special meaning?

Hyia,

1450 level clubplayer here (200 members).

So I just abandoned Nimzowich' "My System" as I can't trust it, but he did mention interesting things. I want to address one concept and that is that he made an issue out of the outpost on a half-open and open file. Is this indeed a (special) thing still today? I know about the relevance of outposts. I read this before from a more recent IM, that this has a special meaning, but didn't elaborate.

So is it a thing (still)?

Cheers!

No, I don't think it has any 'special' meaning, apart from the fact that outposts are important. Of course an outpost on an open file can help you gain control of the open file. This is most often the case when you can put a rook on the outpost and get a passed pawn if they take your rook.

Yes, that was also the theme of one or two of this examples; The rook on the outpost, at the flanks, resulting in the threat of a passer.

Thanks for your feedback. Though Nimzo's work is astonishing, I moved to a different book (Simple Chess by GM Stean).
