Pawn chain impasse

I am a beginner and haven't found a great answer to this. Maybe I am not sure where to look. Are there tips or strategies to deal with locked pawn chains? Effectively, when both players almost have a grid lock of pawn chains and there just seems no way to pass through.
Sorry if this is redundant and has been answered elsewhere.
