Imagine the case where the king is allowed to be captured. Now look at this situation.

 

 

If you move the White king to a4, on Black's turn, the White king will be first captured before the Black king will get captured.

 

The objective of a game of chess is to attempt to capture the opponent's king (this is shortened to just checkmate without actual removal of the checkmated king).

Once in a while, being pinned is a good thing.

So to be clear, it is NOT an illegal move to place your king behind a pinned piece. Of course, it might not be the best move. You are only not allowed to move your king into check.
