I recently started on the lessons, and have been playing the computer. How do you find people to play on this site? Don’t know anyone personally who is interested in chess. Also, is playing real people advantageous to improving , or will the computer do just fine.

There have been tremendous strides made in programming engines to play at less than full strength.  Used to be, they'd play their best for awhile and then deliberately blunder badly.  Nowadays many can play mediocre moves like humans.  Still, they don't really play quite the same.  If you're new to chess and dropping pieces and making other unforced errors, it probably doesn't matter too much who or what you play.  If you've been playing for awhile though, eventually you should try your hand at humans.  As with most web interactions, most people are nice, but some aren't...Have fun!

Thanks for your input, makes sense!

join a team (or many), and they will have daily (1 day or more per move) games and others, and people you can play with.

you can just hit play and the site will find someone for you for live / fast paced games.

Im a beginner also. I think the biggest problem starting out is finding people who will finish the game if they are losing at beginning levels. Everyone finishes if they are winning. From what Ive seen the winners never have a problem with loss of internet....sarcasm...

The computer plays to your beginner  level by moving the same piece back and forth 5 times in a row.
