Playing chess when sleep deprived

I find it extremely annoying that whenever I am tired I cannot win a game of chess to save my life.

For the life of me I can't win a game of chess if I am at all tired

Then stop playing when your tired. Now that you have isolated the problem, you know the solution.

I had to make a rule NOT to make a move before lunch. Seriously. Played terrible in the mornings.

it’s almost like being tired makes your motor and thinking skills worse and makes you move slower

Better to sleep and dream of playing a great game than to stay awake and play a poor one.

I like many I expect can definitely associate. This is not something I have tried but It would be interesting to take a decent sample of games and compare winning % based on the time of day you started the game. I expect the % for those late at night would be much lower.

I play my best right after some lunch and a workout.

I play my best at night. After a long day it can't hurt to play a chess game! Although I do agree - I make more blunders when I'm tired then when I'm not tired. Just play when your fresh. This may sound crazy but after waking up I usually play some bullet games to warm me up for the day, then later on in the day I play a good 10|0 or 30|0 game and I am in the right 'mood' to play.

Do you study tactics, strategy, etc. often? I never study the game which is probably why I'm terrible at it.

Exactly right so if you're too slow to play chess why bother doing anything else? why bother doing anything else even if you're not slow?

Maybe play chess when you are alert, so you are more likely to win a game?

You can be tired worked a lot and still see all the moves andplay well, but sleep deprivation defenetially is a lot bigger problem. Sleep deprivation is guaranteed devastation. When youre so sleep deprived that after a few days of good sleep you get quickly sleep deprived again its time for a week of vacation feom work

One of my best OTB tournament results I played was after a night of staying up preparing. I was exhausted the next day, but the adrenaline somehow kept me going. However I do not recommend doing something like this, not only performance wise but also, in general, physically and mentally speaking.

I already suffered from this. Comming home drunk or maybe nbot being able to sleep at night and trying to play blitz... losing one after another and promising to myself "I just need to win one to be able to sleep". Results: Going to work with 2 hours of sleep and losing 150 rating points...

On Monday I was 1072 in Rapid. I play 10 minute no increment. I had set myself a goal to improve from the start of the month to 1100. So when I finally got a chance to play with no distractions it was just before bed. I started losing rating. So I tried to play catch up more chess. I had played just around 150 rapid games since joining. This week I have played over 100 and most of them were on that night. Tanked my rating to 980 getting progressively worse and not sleeping. Moral of the story is when you are sleep deprived do everything you can to sleep. When you are clearly tired go to sleep. Don't make yourself sleep deprived to play chess badly.

I just realized that in Insights (new feature released in April for Platinum members), you can see a breakdown of Games Played, Results, and Accuracy broke down by Time Of Day.

Surprisingly, just looking at Accuracy and Results, there is no noticeable decline in my play at night from a decentish sample (129) games, worth noting though that I am generally selective about when I play at night, choosing not to if I feel tired (hence why it only accounts for 6% of my games)
