pretty high puzzle score, but no rating improvement.

I like to think I got a pretty high puzzle rating for my 750ish rating. My puzzle rating is about 1900, but I can’t understand why my chess rating isn’t improving.

I’m having such a hard time breaking into 800. I really want to make it to a 1000 rating. Any advice?

Dear j_lyg,

I am a certified, full-time chess coach and International Master, so I have seen it and tried it all.
There are so many ways to get better and I know it can be overwhelming.
You can learn from free videos on youtube, there are books at your disposal that can all help, but they are not tailored to your needs.

One of the most important things you can do is to analyze your games! You must learn from your mistakes! That is a priority. You can't really move on to a new, different topic and learn new ideas if you still make the same mistakes over and over again!

This is where a chess coach comes into the picture. A good coach can show you how to study, what to study, gives you the material YOU need. Naturally, it takes time to use everything in practice, but if you are relentless and persistent you will succeed!happy.png
You should learn the main principles in every area of the game (opening, middlegame, endgame).  Don't focus on only one part! You should improve your tactical vision as well as it is part of all areas!
This how I built my training program for my students. We discuss more than one topic during a lesson so it's always interesting and they can improve constantly. I give homework too and the right tools to make practicing enjoyable and effective!happy.png
Don't worry about your rating and the ups and downs! Just keep on playing and practicing!

I hope this helps.happy.png I wish you good games and 100+ extra ratingshappy.png

If you have a puzzle rating of 1900 then you know how to calculate and look ahead, and anticipate how an opponent may use defensive resource or create counter threats. Are you actually using these skills in your games or is your puzzle play different to game play? You should use the thinking techniques you apply in puzzles in your games. I looked at your last few losses, it looked like you were losing a few points of material in the first 10 to 15 moves. Are you considering your opponents threats? Also it looked like you were just attacking stuff with your best pieces, are you building your position? Get back to basics: opening principles, complete development, improve your pieces finding good stable squares where they create threats or control space, control and play in the centre, ignore low hanging fruit, prioritie your worst piece, evaluate your opponents threats and plans, look for their mistakes then grab and hold an advantage.

Wow thank you for that @MarkGrubb!

Agree, I was like that and maybe still the same old me. I was a bit lucky on some of my high rated opponents so I got some scores but rating is not the basis, the important thing in learning is we fully understand the game/s. I believe analysing and practising are the best 2 ways to improve.

tactics in actual games arise out of solid positions and it takes a lot of experience to feel and spot that "yes in this chess position there may be a tactical threat to take the advantage against my opponent".

issues like loosing material in the first 10-15 moves can be (mostly) corrected by studying some openings and their respective ideas in their middle games - pick an opening you really feel you like as white and learn everything in and out about it using resources - plenty of good videos on youtube. as for black learn the theory of at least one defense against e4, against d5, (and then c4 and Nf3 and play it - and then play it some more because you will be surprised by your opponents making every move imaginable (which sometimes diverge from theory).

Also it seems at your level, at least initially, it is avoiding one move blunders, being too aggressive and just learning sound positional and defensive strategies. Most of the time to outplay your opponent, you just have to be patient and wait and they will hang something. You want to make sure all your pieces defend one another and not be the one hanging them.

And congrats that is really good puzzle score - most of your opponents won't actually be using deep tactical calculations of that level against you if you are playing 800s, it is mostly keeping your positions on the board compact, everything defending each other and just taking advantage of them hanging a piece or two.

As for learning to integrate puzzle skills as MarkGrubb above said - it is easier at the start in longer time formats where every now and then you don't need to rush ... you can stop in a position and start to look for tactical sequences you can use. Later it will become easier in shorter time controls as it becomes a thing of muscle memory to just recognize a positional pattern that leads to a certain tactic.

The most important thing is to have vision and a plan of how you are going to win a game on the board - like yes this is the position but in x amount of moves it will likely be this and identifying that this is good or bad for me - can I create checkmate threats of treats to inavetably capture a certain piece. What puzzles/ tacticals do it help you to force the game into that transformation on the board with ideally only moves for your opponent to respond to.

I've climbed about 400 rating points in my blitz over the last month, what it really comes down to, is recognizing when your opponents are making mistakes, but also when you are making mistakes. It's also always good to learn a few openings really well, and then punish people when they misplay it. One of the other key things that a lot of people leave out, is time management. There is something to be said about knowing when to take your time or speed up. These are the things that helped me, hope they help you too!

All the tactics in the world wont help you improve if all youre playing is speed chess.  Take your last game: https://www.chess.com/game/live/14108464815?username=j_lyg

You lost in 20 moves of a G15/10, and still has over 11 minutes left.

If you're not going to play slow time controls to instill what you're trying to learn, improvement wont come.

It is rather an incentive to solve puzzles carefully.

as a person who just got into 800, play calmly, and take breaks if you lose a lot of games.
