Queens Gambit Resign! (Spoilers)

People talk about that wonderful series quite often. The chess in that series can be very instructive Some very good players helped with that series including Kasparov. In this case the tutor with one word--taught his student [Beth] something that probably half of chess players do not know. Simply brilliant to include this one word in the series.

I teach group lessons by Zoom for two elementary school kids. One will resign and one will not, no matter what I say. It causes some friction. (He doesn't like his opponent to resign, either.) I promise I didn't teach him this!
I know a family of strong young players who apparently have a family or coach rule never to resign. I once got a completely won position against the youngest member: they studied the board carefully for several minutes and then quickly and confidently played...a helpmate. At least it got the game over with quickly, but I thought it pointed out the futility of the never-resign rule.

antonista in the Queena Gambit series Beth was a beginner and was told by her tutor to resign immediately when she lost her queen with almost no compensation. Beth did not understand but the tutor was correct.
Not resigning would have wasted the time of her tutor and worse than that would have taught Beth to be satisfied with a very lower class of play.
In the last world championship both Magnus and Fabi missed wins against each other. If some of the best in the history of the game can screw up, I'm not offended if you want me to prove I can beat you.
Shamus You seem to be missing the point as to why Beth was told to resign it that situation?
My point was simply that every player screws up in a winning position occasionally and it isn't disrespectful for someone not to resign. If anything it can be instructive to have to find defensive resources. As far as Shaibel's playing strength, bethbot is rated 1600 after she beats the high school team. I believe in the show she was wiping the floor with Shaibel at that point. Shaibel almost definitely would have won, but he would have made quite a few mistakes along the way.

Beth bots are 600 points worse than higher than their actual strength.
I remember her saying the top guy was 1600 and she crushed him in under 30 moves, and she told Shaibel that they played horribly. This implies Shaibel is better, probably around 2000. If you give a 2000 player queen for knight and they have infinite time, they will beat you. That is why he told her to resign.
The bethbots are very overrated. I beat the 2700 one a couple of times and I dont think she was even master strength. It has been a while since Ive seen the show though so Ill take your word for her strength.
Back to the topic though, there are so many drawn endgames thanks to fortresses, opposite colored bishops, various rook endgames, etc. At any level, I say play on as long if you feel you have a chance.
In Beth's case I agree though she would have been crushed.

Something that shd be there to tell people who haven’t yet seen something u reveal wt happens

When Beth did that simuil she was no longer a beginner. The statement "Resign!" was given when she was a beginner.
I do not remember that someone said the best player she faced in the simul was as high as 1600?
But in any event in a slow game against any opponent most players should resign after losing their queen unless there is an unusual circumstance.. There are reasons for this and most good tutors know this and teach this.
[I have given hundreds of simuls by the way] Also have taught hundreds-maybe thousands of school kids.
Shamus that is not why Beth's tutor insisted that Beth resign.
I'm sure your advice is well intentioned, but there are many chess professionals who disagree with your advice.

Here, for example, is an article by GM Serper stating that he advises his students NOT to resign.
I thought Shaibel was an interesting enough character, but his motives for demanding her resignation seemed rooted more in his grisly character than in his interest in chess etiquette.
The scene where young Beth lost her queen and was told to "resign!" was interesting.
Beth wanted to continue but her tutor knew it was best for her to resign.
