Quick Question about guest accounts.

I'm a new player,  I have been playing here for about 4 months,  my rating is low,  I play by the principles for opening,  my middle game involves basically not trying to hang pieces and my end game is essentially me trying to rush unsupported pawns to the other side.

I know these are not the best way to play,  and I'm trying to improve.  I sometimes do this as a guest because it allows me to try new things I've seen or learnt,  without suffering repercussions of losing when I mess it up.  I duly click the new player or beginner level button and up until a 2-3 weeks ago I would usually,  most  of the time,  get matched against some one else who was my level whom I'd have a relatively balanced game with.

More recently however it seems that even this basic levelling structure for guest accounts has gone entirely out of the window.  The last couple of weeks I have lost 90% or more of the games I've played as guest,  and not because I've been trying new idea's or because I've played particularly poorly - but because my opponent is way way above my ability and seems to systematically punish my poor moves.  Even when the engine says I have few mistakes or blunders the result is the same - checkmate in 20 moves.

I get it,  lots of players are better than me,  but it's been different recently.  There are changes being made and they're having a negative impact on my enjoyment of the game and playing here.

This has turned into more of a rant than I'd anticipated and for that I'm sorry,  I guess I just wanted to make it known that some changes are being noticed and I'm not enjoying them.

So my question is,  why is the way in which guest players are dealt with being changed so much ?

I didn't even know this guest mode thing existed until a few weeks ago. If you're logged in you can't get to it, and I was never visiting chess.com while not logged in.

I played some games... never as a "beginner" but even at the highest level ("expert" is 1600 IIRC) I was playing people who were significantly worse than me.

So maybe what changed is that more people with accounts are finding out about this guest mode, and giving it a try.

Another possibility is you lost 3 or 4 games in a row and are looking for something to blame... in other words nothing has changed, but sometimes random events produce a string of wins or losses (flip a coin for 5 minutes and record your longest streak, you might be surprised).

Anyway, those are my thoughts about it.

Thanks for the reply.
I'm not playing people worse than me,  i'm playing people significantly better - which is not so much fun.  Perhaps there are just more people with accounts but I think it's more significant than that.   Additionally,  I'd be happy if it was just 3-4 game losing streaks, but it is regularly more like 8-10 games,  over the course of several hours, and nearly every occasion.

Here is an example.  sorry it's in an emboard.  it's the only way to share now from guest accounts...

www.chess.com/emboard?id=8041595

In this example,  I clicked to play a new player.  When the game analysis came back the engine said I made only 1 mistake - just 1.  zero blunders.  For a new guy,  that's a pretty good game,  yet deeper analysis shows black's position getting stronger and stronger and stronger until they're up 25.  The sort of incremental growth in strength I'd expect from 1400+ or so.

As it turns out I actually won this game simply because my opponent stopped playing attention to what I was doing - But this sort of difference in overall ability has become incredibly common in the guest account level selection,  and I am 99% certain that it will be putting a lot of new players off playing,  if they're getting beaten in this fashion.

Edit:   I just learnt that I can import a game to lichess analysis so here it is in real:  https://lichess.org/oePWtwUq

Of course,  I could be wrong about believing I'm capable of beating other new players.  but I should be able to beat some of them - I used to be able to.

Hmm, I don't know what tell you.

I guess the nice thing about making an account is you get a rating, and that way you're (much) more likely to be paired against people near your ability.

You can do custom challenge, opponent rating +/-100 of your rating , "unrated", etc.

I’ve only done the guest mode once and I crushed a supposed expert rated 2k nether hé or I was 2k

the "new beginner" opponents I was talking about - totally crushing me with 99% accuracy...  and 17 of 21 moves being scored best by the engine, with the other 4 being book moves.

Yeh,  I made some dumb plays,  because I am a beginner and I'm exploring what happens - but I expect to be playing other beginners,  not engines.

Yep, that looks like a cheater.

I don't understand this. You seem to want to play players around your level, and are trying to use a guest account to do that? You're rating is primarily to help match you to people around your level... Why don't you just play rated?

If you are 'trying new things' as you put it, and they don't work out, your rating will soon bounce back, as you'll then be paired with lower level players and your win rate will go up until your rating reaches your 'real' level again.

The guest rating system is totally off. Probably because t let's people choose how good they THINK they are to start. My account is about 1200 and when I play guest i can get up to 1700+ which is totally false.

I use guest when i am on a different device. But yeah... just log in and take a few losses =)
