Rating System

When someone first joins the site they pick an arbitrary rating such as 800. In the first few games this rating will swing wildly up and down with wins and losses because it is not accurate yet. The more games that are played, the less extreme the rating swings become as the rating becomes more accurate. There is a system called GlickoRD which you can see in your stats I believe, which is a reflection of the accuracy of your current rating. The lower this figure is, the more accurate your rating is.

In short, Chess.com uses the Glicko RD system. The "RD" stands for "Rating Deviation". If you haven't played many games (or have haven't played many in a long time), then your rating will swing more heavily to try and more quickly reflect what your rating should be. The more games you play, the swing will settle and you will have more consistent, smaller rating changes.
Keep in mind as always that your rating increase and decrease is also tied to your rating versus your opponent's rating.
