Reached my chess goal!

I learned to play chess at 10, I enjoyed it but rarely had anyone to play with growing up and didnt love it enough to join a chess club.

When COVID took over work slowed down so I downloaded a random chess app as I had done in the past, just to play some games to pass the time. After a couple weeks I thought "I can be good if I study theories and openings/strategies, that will be my new hobby." I bought a membership on Chess.com to use all the tools available (lessons, puzzeles, etc.) and set my goal at 1500.

Last night I reached my original goal, my wife and I popped a bottle of champagne and celebrated. I love chess, I dont feel burned out at all and plan to keep playing for many years and see how far I can go (dont feel like Ive reached my peak yet).

None of my friends and family care about this so Id rather share my accomplishment here...

That's great.

Gratz! Did the progress slow down at any point? Did you just grind games or have a study plan of some sort?

I can appreciate the focus on personal improvement. Well done! And I can certainly identify with the lack of interest from friends and family.

Progress is awesome, well done. You are now rated higher than 96.1% of Rapid players. Too good for the beginners section wink.png

Congratulations!

Similar story... my other "sport" is table tennis (ping pong).  Competitive table tennis uses the same rating system as chess, and when I started playing table tennis my goal was 1500 because I wanted to be at least average.  It took me 15 years to reach 1500.  After another 10 years I reached a peak that was over 2100.  If someone had told me that someday I'd be 2100, I would have laughed it off as being out of the question.  I honestly am still thrilled of having been able to reach my lifetime goal of 1500, because I started late and don't have much talent.  But you never know how far you might ultimately get... however high you manage to get, always look back with pride at having reached your 1500 goal.

Congratulations!  I know the feeling of having a hobby that no one in the family cares about and having to share your goal reaching celebrations with others. So glad you came here to celebrate.thumbup.png
