Rules regarding checkmate with Queen

Hi, I only started playing chess 3 weeks ago. I think I’ve got a grasp of the basic rules, but struggling with understanding when the Queen can and cannot check in a square directly next to the King.

I’ve analysed several games where it says I could have checked sooner than I did. The ‘best’ move suggested puts my Queen in a box directly next to the King. I would have thought the King could simply capture my Queen on the next move, providing I don’t have her square guarded by another piece.

I captured a screenshot of one instance where this was the case, but it doesn’t look like you can share images on the forum. Can anyone recommend a detailed online guide to the rules?

Thanks,

Kevin

Thanks,

Just show the position. There is an "insert chess game or diagram" button on the top left of your posting options. Simply set it up there. You can use the FEN or PGN of the game if you have it to set up the position.

Kevin,

Three possibilities come to mind:

1. The queen actually was protected but you just missed it.

2. The analysis was wrong.

3. By capturing the queen, the king moves into a position to be soon mated or it helps the queen's player gain a massive advantage in some other way.

Catmaster0, I’m using the app on my iPhone, and all it offers it text input, there isn’t even an option to select your comment to reply directly.

Thanks for the responses everyone. The iPhone app only allows text input. Next time I need to post on the forum I’ll make sure I’m on a PC.

Thanks, I’ve just uploaded it from the website version of the forum.

That move itself isn’t mate, but it leads to mate pretty quickly afterNc7+ then Rd8

They are forced to take the queen on e8 with their king (Kxe8). You then move your knight (knights are labeled N as K is already covered by King) to c7 to put them in check (Nc7+), and their only legal move is to move their king back to f8 (Kf8). Your rook on the d file now goes to d8 and it is checkmate (Rd8#).

It says so right under the move. (19... Kxe8 20. Nc7+ Kf8 21. Rd8#)

Thanks, that all makes sense. I hadn’t noticed the next moves listed at the bottom. That will be helpful with understanding future analysis. Thanks for all the help.
