Should beginners avoid playing gambits?

Is it better as a beginner to stick to the fundamentals of taking the center and developing pieces or should beginners also try out gambits early on? If you recommend to try out gambits which gambits do you think are easiest to learn for new players?

Hi! My name is Lauren Goodkind and I’m a chess coach and chess book author based in California: www.ChessByLauren.com

I encourage beginners to avoid playing gambits since they need to master the fundamentals of chess.

If you have time to memorize a specific gambit, then go ahead. But I would use that time to try to master the fundamentals.  Ask basic questions to avoid making silly moves.

I hope that this helps.

If you want to try playing a gambit, I think the Evans Gambit is a good place to start.
