Should I feel discouraged being at 850 ELO?

Welcome back. I hope you are enjoying yourself. Chess can be fun, but it can frustrate too. I read all the comments. You have two worth reading: @Strangemover and @RAU4ever, especially the latter. If you consider carefully the advice of those two members, you will find a way forward. The others are wasting your time.

No! Of course not! We were all there, trust me, 850 is nothing. You won't even notice how quick your rating grows. Just play more and analyze your game, and solve tactics.

You're good at something but it's definitely not chess. Accept this and you won't feel discouraged.

Hard to think of how to describe that first sentence on a forum that doesn't allow swearing. *Messed* up, perhaps. Don't get discouraged, period. It'll be fine.

I don't like this kind of static defeatist mindset where you say "I'm not good at _____"

Who's to say he won't get good at chess in the future? Who's to say he won't be rated 2000+ in a few years?

Rather than saying "I'm not good at chess", it's better to say "I'm at the beginning of my chess journey, and I intend to go far."

1) Giving someone a false sense of hope is not wise. And, if you assume that OP will become a Titled player, that's debatable.

2) Being a 2000+ rated player means nothing. It'll still be a game, not a profession.

3) Unless you convert your skills into monetary terms, you aren't considered "good". FIDE 2300 rating at least is required.

4) Chess is just another game like a million others. OP can utilize his time, resources and money more efficiently on the ones he's good at rather than waste it all to be "good" at chess.

5) The topic, "Should I feel discouraged?" What's there to feel discouraged about? Rating? Why bother unless you're a professional. Turn blunders into laughter and enjoy this "game of chess". Continue to improve as you can.

6) The co-founders of this website are pretty average chess players but they're extremely "good" at making this site a profitable one. Should they feel discouraged about their ratings?

I strongly disagree that your chess skills mean nothing unless you're a professional.

Firstly, people around 2000 rating are usually good enough to start coaching or streaming, even if they're not top tournament players winning prizes consistently.

And secondly, there's a lot of value in going to tournaments and finishing in the top half, even if you're not the very best. Just being able to compete against other players at a club level and put up a good fight is a worthwhile reward in and of itself.

If you want to play chess, you should be playing. And it's a game that requires study, so of course studying is not a waste of time. Knowledge is a reward in itself. I wouldn't mind the trolls too much. You're using your own name, and they're in no position to do so. And if any of them have a mid-level rating then there's probably half a million players on this site alone who can do better than that. And they should know to stick to forums where they're less unwanted.

Ah~Hikaru and Levy are the best combo ever! It’s okay to feel down at times; I’ve burst out into tears before just for losing a few points 😅

Also, I wish you the best with your chess journey <3

Don't give up. I was 700-800 rated at the start of the year and through a lot of hard work I've improved by about 400 points in all time controls.

This isn't impressive compared to people who say they just did this or that and got to 2000 instantly but it's progress and it also shows getting better at chess takes time for some people.

i play since 9 month and i 500 in blitz. low time control may be fun but isnt helpful to progress. i am nearly 1000 in 30 min game. it isnt much after so long of practising but there is a tendency to say beginners should be 1000 but totallly beginners should be about 700-800 at first.

I wish there was a good way to like these comments. These have already been so helpful!... I mean I do feel a little called out with previous games.

Thank you!

My quality of chess was embarrassing after 1 year of playing chess. Then received one good puzzle book by John Emms, after starting to work through the book I managed to start with 1600 fide elo. Study tactics and your games in the very beginning.
