For the past days I have spent a lot of time doing chess puzzles, at first I'd take several minutes to calculate a 800 problem due to lack of confidence and wanting to not see my chess rating go down, then as my puzzle rating got higher (1700-1800), I got a bit more confident, and might've dropped some of the calculating part. I began to move based on how it felt, if there were any calculation, they were less mentally taxing than before. I am worried that this may hurt how I perform when I play chess, which may actually bring me more bad than good. Should I go back to calculating puzzles or should I continue to use intuition?
In my opinion, having insights into chess is the key thing, so for me you are doing the right thing. If you didn’t have insights, it probably wouldn’t make sense to play. You have to trust and believe in your intuitions, and go your own way, because sometimes forgetting what you have learned from books and trying to do it your way is even better.
A key purpose of puzzles is to train your pattern recognition and save you the need to calculate. If you’re succeeding at the puzzles you approach this way, it’s working. If you aren’t, then you probably should be taking the time to work them out accurately.
