I have a method for getting better at something:

First learn how to do it.

Then do it 10,000 times.

You should be better at it after you've done it 10,000 times.

I know, I know, this doesn't sound very helpful, maybe even flippant. But it's really the only way to get better at anything. Just do it over and over and over again.

It helps to not think of your rating as some kind of judgement of your worth. The point of your rating is to put you up against opponents who will provide you with satisfying challenges. If you are enjoying your games more often than not then the rating is doing its job. If you are only playing to make that number go up, then you'll never be happy because you're not playing the game for the enjoyment of it.
